How the Baby Bar (FYLSE) Is Graded

The First-Year Law Students’ Examination is graded using a scaled scoring system designed by the State Bar of California to ensure fairness across different test administrations. Because the difficulty of each exam can vary, raw scores are adjusted, or “scaled,” to create a consistent and reliable measurement of student performance. Understanding how the Baby Bar is graded is essential for law students seeking to improve their results and develop a targeted study plan.

Multiple-Choice Scoring

The FYLSE includes a 100-question multiple-choice section covering Contracts, Criminal Law, and Torts — the three foundational subjects for first-year law students.
Your number of correct answers determines your raw score, which is then converted into a scaled multiple-choice score on an 800-point scale.
The scaling process adjusts for variations in difficulty so that scores remain comparable across different administrations of the Baby Bar.

Total Score and Passing Threshold

Your final Baby Bar score is determined by your scaled multiple-choice performance.
The maximum possible score is 800 points, and students must achieve a minimum total scaled score of 560 to pass the Baby Bar.
Importantly, there is no separate passing score for different parts of the exam. Your overall scaled score determines whether you pass.
