1. What is the Baby Bar (FYLSE)?

Students enrolled in unaccredited law schools, registered law office study programs, or certain correspondence/online law schools must take and pass the Baby Bar after their first year. Some students at accredited schools may also need to take it if they fall out of alignment with academic progress requirements.
3. When is the Baby Bar offered?
The FYLSE is typically offered twice per year — once in June and once in October or November. Exact testing dates are posted by the State Bar of California on their official website.
4. What subjects are tested on the exam?
The Baby Bar tests three first-year law school subjects:
- Contracts
- Criminal Law
- Torts
The multiple-choice questions cover these subjects.
5. What is the format of the Baby Bar?
- 100 multiple-choice questions
- The exam is administered in one day.
6. How is the Baby Bar scored?
The 100 multiple-choice questions measure the content areas of Contracts, Criminal Law, and Torts. Of the 100 multiple-choice questions, 25 questions on the exam may be new multiple-choice questions being pretested for operational use. The pretested questions cover a variety of topics from each content area.
The remaining questions will be equally weighted such that a perfect raw score will still be 100. Thus, an applicant’s raw multiple-choice score will equal the number of questions answered correctly multiplied by their weighting. Through a process known as “equating”, the weighted multiple-choice raw scores will be converted to a scale with a theoretical maximum of 800 points. Because there are multiple forms of the exam, this process adjusts for the possible differences between forms and administrations of the exam in the average difficulty of the particular version of the exam that the applicant takes.
An applicant’s total score on the exam is the applicant’s scaled score on the multiple-choice questions. Applicants need a total scaled score of 560 or higher to pass the exam.
7. What score do I need to pass the Baby Bar?
To pass the FYLSE, students must achieve a minimum total scaled score of 560 out of 800.
8. What is the Baby Bar pass rate?
Pass rates vary each year but are historically low, often ranging between 15% and 25%, depending on the administration. Repeat takers usually have a lower pass rate than first-time takers. Official pass rates for each cycle are published by the State Bar.
9. How many times can I take the Baby Bar?
Students may retake the Baby Bar as many times as necessary. However, law school credit earned after the first year may be limited until the student passes the exam, depending on the school and program structure.
10. How long will it take to receive my Baby Bar results?
Results are generally released 8–10 weeks after the exam administration. Exact release dates vary. The State Bar posts results on its website once available.

No. The Baby Bar is a gateway exam for first-year law students. After completing law school, all students must still take and pass the California Bar Examination to become licensed attorneys.
